Gear Lever Housing Modifications
The original Porsche gear lever housing has a major drawback for a custom project like a Ferrari P4 replica: it’s bulky, unrefined, and made entirely of molded plastic.
To improve shifting dynamics, aftermarket conversion kits are available that replace the factory nylon bearing housings with anodized aluminum ones. The goal of this modification is to eliminate flexing, reduce unwanted play in the linkage, and deliver a much tighter, more positive shift action.
Rather than buying an off-the-shelf kit, I decided to adapt the concept and scratch-build my own adjustable aluminum bearing housings.

Step 1: Modifying the Bearings
Using the aftermarket kits as inspiration, I fabricated custom aluminum bearing housings. Making them adjustable allows me to fine-tune the linkage over time and completely dial out any slop in the shifter mechanism.
Step 2: Stripping the Bulk
Next, I stripped down the factory Porsche unit. I carefully trimmed away all the excess plastic and bulk that wasn’t actively involved in the lever movement mechanism. This left me with just the core mechanical linkage.

Step 3: Fabricating the New Enclosure
Using 3mm aluminum sheet, I fabricated a sleek, minimalist housing to replace the massive factory plastic shell.
Here is the new assembly temporarily held together with Clekos (temporary skin fasteners popular in aviation and panel fabrication), ensuring a perfect fit with the trimmed original core secured inside:

Step 4: TIG Welding & Mock-Up
My mate Ray—a veteran of the P4 chassis welding—kindly stepped in to TIG weld the aluminum sheets together, transforming the individual pieces into a solid, lightweight structure.

With the shifter mechanism permanently housed, I attached the shift cables to test the full range of motion right in the chassis.

Final Tweaks
Everything is lining up perfectly. Once final positioning is confirmed, the temporary Cleko fasteners will be drilled out and replaced with permanent, flush stainless steel screws for a clean, mechanical finish. The result is a shift mechanism that looks as crisp as it feels.
